Changes in the past twenty years have influenced the inventory carried in
Ruthie's Variety. A recent move away from crafts by the public has reduced
the amount of crafting material in the store and a rise in the interest
in quilting have increased the sale of yard goods. Computer and business
supplies sales in the community have risen in the past few years and the
store now has a good selection of software and computer products and business
supplies for the area business needs. The size of the baby department has
increased and the store carries men's, women's and children's clothing,
toys and gift items, holiday supplies, and greeting cards.
Ruthie's Variety offers specialty services to the community and surrounding
area. An alteration and mending service are maintained in the store as well
as custom embroidering and monograming, machine applique, heat transfers
for T-shirts, sweatshirts and sports team apparel, and a dry cleaning pick-up
and drop-off service with Benda's in Ord. New items recently added to the
large variety of items at the store are luggage and a new line of specialty
soaps.
Ruthie Gompert and the staff at Ruthie's Variety feel that watching the
local children grow from small children coming into the store for bubble
gum to young adults and personal service for the customers, be it delivery
to the elderly or just a pleasant visit, are the most rewarding aspects
of the business and look forward to many more years to come as a business
