Northside Bar and Grill
223 Grand Ave. on the North side of the Square
The Northside Bar began as a pool hall in the 1920's. When 3.2 beer was legalized in 1932, the Northside was opened as a beer parlor by Joe Flakus and later sold to Jack and Bee Thavenet. Since the early days the Northside Bar has had many different owners but always maintained a "life of it's own".
Scott Krause is the current owner of the Northside Bar. The walls of the bar are lined with photos and memorabilia of the historic rodeo days of Burwell. The Northside has maintained a rich rodeo heritage and many stories can be told by the old-timers about infamous characters and events of the patrons.
The Northside serves food from the grill seven days and nights a week and offers daily home-cooked lunch specials. Scott is especially proud of the Rib Eye steaks. "I cut the rib eyes myself, a very generous portion, and we serve them with all the trimmings. My philosophy is "Not everyone drinks, but everyone eats" and we strive to offer quality food to our customers.
The promotions and special events offered by the Northside Bar are popular with the clientele. " We have special parties, customer appreciation events, promotions, monthly birthday parties with a free supper, and of course Nebraska Football Parties." commented Scott. The Burwell Rodeo is definitely our busiest time of the year. We do as much business in that week than in the entire month of January or February." During the Burwell Rodeo the Northside features a beer garden on the west side of the establishment, food and drink specials and live Karaoke as well as other events to celebrate the rodeo week. The business enjoys good lake traffic and during hunting season the bar is a popular spot for sportsmen to gather, taking advantage of the business's comfortable, casual atmosphere to swap stories and relive the hunt.
The Northside Bar offers Coors Beer on tap as well as domestic and imported beers and liquor. A new pool table, three video games and a state of the art compact disk player with 12,000 selections are available for the entertainment of the patrons. The bar has seating for 100, and two large television sets for viewing.
The Northside Bar is located on the north side of the square in Burwell, the same location as in the 1900's, and is opened seven days a week.
