Great Western Gas Co.
110 S. Hwy. 11 on the East edge of Burwell.
Great Western Gas Co. was purchased by the present owner, Bob Bobalm in 1963.
James Dobbins managed GWG for Bobalm for over 15 years. When James retired the manager position was filled by Jim Dobbins, Jr. The early employees for GWG were Mary Davis, bookkeeper, Ron Vodehnal, Marvin Murphy, Jim Dobbins, and James Dobbins.
Safety regulations and the incredible rise in volume of propane sold by Great Western Gas are the two most notable changes according to Jim and James Dobbins. " The regulations on things, that we never thought of special valves for bottles, special procedures and handling of the propane, and education for employees have really changed."
Great Western Gas currently employees four full time people and two part time. The company purchase Northern Gas Company in Sargent, NE in 1977 and manage the GWG Company in Sargent also. The Burwell company covers a six county area and Sargent a seven county area. The GWG company handles a low of three 9000 gal. transports of propane a week, compared to the 1200 gal. of the 1940's and early 50's. The NPGA (Nebraska Propane Gas, Association) offers CEPT, certified employee training programs that are mandatory for employees at Great Western Gas.
Great Western Gas sells a small range of gas appliances and gas grills in addition to the propane business. Last year the Great Western Gas Company was recognized for being a Lennox Dealer for 40 years. They carry a line of high efficiency furnaces and ventless heating units. Bob Bobalm is the owner/manager and Deb Emerton manages the office end of both the Burwell and Sargent businesses.
